What are Students Thinking when they make a Career Choice?

Let us get to the ground level and understand why in the first place students select a particular course of education?

When I chose to do my graduation specializing in economics, mathematics and statistics it was purely because I had the opportunity to choose from many industries that would potentially use my line of expertise.

This was strategizing my life so as to optimize my opportunities.

On the other hand, it was also because I had a family member who was also in the same line of expertise and was successful too. Lastly, the fact that I actually did enjoy my subjects and the projects I did was purely luck.

It does not happen to every one of us that we find those subjects that we actually like. Because until you learn and master a subject you like, you will never know.

Therefore, when students choose the subjects they want to master, it is not entirely because one knows that he or she likes it, it could also be because of parental guidance, peer pressure or simply because of market demands.student career planning

Most students actually make plans; foresee their careers as being an administrative manager, marketing executive, chief sales officer etc. These plans that young minds make are in the form of aspirations and dreams that they want to achieve sooner or later.

They think that picking up the right course of education is very important to pursue their dreams, which is true. They think that careers are another stage of life just like their education phase; where one tends to make unarmed decisions about their career.

There is too much though processing that happens at the end of graduation for a student, it could be in the right way or the wrong way. Let us now see what happens when the thought process leads them to think illogically.

Why Do Students make Wrong Career Choices?

As brought about in one of the above paragraphs, sometimes students are lead into making some tough decisions, which could have consequences.

1. Peer pressure:

peer pressure on students Most of us do understand what peer pressure is. Sometimes the fact that as experienced as we are, peer pressure does get to us.

The same illogical situation arises many a times with these tiny little friends of ours. Students are forced into making decisions that they ideally would not want to make.

For example, taking up a wrong course of study. This would then lead to choosing a career which would not suit him or her basically because one would not have enjoyed working through the course.

So basically, when your graduation certificate certifies you in a certain stream of education that you originally didn’t want to be a part of, then one will quite naturally get interview calls for the same line of work that you had studied for.

So then at the end of the day, career is not in the path that one had wished for. So, there goes the first way of making a wrong career choice.

2. Fulfilling parents’ desires:

Parents have always been the guiding stars in our lives. Sometimes we as students tend to make decisions based on what our parents have foreseen for us.

But one must realize that just as much as we want to respect the decision that they take for us, we must stop to analyze if that is a career that we can afford to take up. This could be an immature way of choosing a career.

3. Market boom:

choosing career path Students sometimes make this mistake of choosing a certain stream of education based on what are the prevailing circumstances in the market economy.

Based on the on goings of the economy, some of them choose their career path. But little do they know that by the time they graduate and enter into their respective careers, the needs and demands of a certain market economy would have changed.

Therefore, it is best if one can choose a career that he or she likes to be a part of. And to do so, the student must choose his line of education where in his interest lies.

4. An assumed social life:

Some of us tend to assume careers that may not suit our present needs, but because we have the urge to live in a certain higher standard of living we tend to choose careers that will lead us to such standards.

But there is a lot more to do than just choosing a difficult or off the course career. Because the way of living as well the routine of life needs to be amended to match that of another hyped social life.

5. Confusion:

confusion in career choice A very common but the most prevalent issue amongst the young ones nowadays are that they are always confused.

With the countless number of options and career ways that one gets to observe these days, it is quite confusing for many of our students to date. This is all the happening of modern technology that the world now moves on.

There are many other reasons why it becomes difficult for students to choose and they are lack of self knowledge, lack of maturity and growth intellectually etc.

What Should you Actually Do?

Now that we have discussed the most famous reasons as to why students could screw up, we now highlight a little bit about what one could do to prevent these scenarios.

The first and foremost action that students need to take and believe in, is to find the correct stream of education that they would be interested in for a long term.

It is all about the knowledge and intelligence that one possesses to take up certain proficiency. Therefore, find that subject where in your interest lies. That way most problems laid above get solved.

Second, one needs to focus and concentrate on whatever you do to make a good career path. Let there not be a lack of self-motivation or low self esteem about oneself. Everybody is different and special in their own ways. And we are all here to make that difference count in our lives.
