Robots in the Workplace – Types – Pros and Cons

30089

Whatever is done by humans is now being done by the robots.

There is just a thin line difference to what humans can do and what robot can do.

Most of the work now is being done by the machines or the robots in the workplace.

Robots are currently working in almost every field like medical, non-medical, mechanical, documentation and many other.

The types of fields where different kinds of robots working are as follows:

Workplace Robots Pros Cons

Types of Robots in a Workplace:

1. Pharmacist:

Maybe the next time you will be given prescription by the robots and not the doctors.

The UCSF medical centre has recently launched a robotics controlling lab at two hospitals.

They work in a manner that once the machines receive the order from the physicians or the pharmacist, the robotics picks the dose, package them and then hand over it to an individual.

So, this way the robots would help in doing the work at a fast pace.

2. Lawyers and the paralegals:

Instead of paying the army of lawyers to have a look at the documents, a software can do a great job within no time and that too at less cost.

The New York Times had also reported on this saying that a software has been provided that can help in analyzing approximately 1.5 million documents that too for less than the cost otherwise incurred.

If we think it from the viewpoint of legal staff, they get tired easily, get headaches and also get easily bored of reviewing the documents on daily basis, but the computers neither get bored, tired or a headache.

3. Robots by astronauts:

Space is the biggest example of making use of the robots. The NASA’s robonaut is the best example of using the Android technology.

It is highly equipped with wide range of the sensors which help to do all the menial jobs just like cleaning, assisting the humans in space work and so on.

So, in this sector too the robots are being used.

4. Our brave Soldiers:

In the field of the army, the robots are being used. Although the soldiers are not replaced with the robots, yes the drone and the other machines are being used in order to combat the missions.

One of the best examples is MAARS which provided robots in Iraq.

According to that, the robots were equipped with the GPS monitor which can be programmed to look at the fire and no fire zones, also to open the doors and even to bring out the human bodies.

So, this way the robots are being used in the war zone in an efficient manner.

5. The babysitting also:

The robots are not only used for work or in fighting grounds, but they are also a great deal of entertainment.

A Japanese retailer introduced a 4-foot tall robot in 2008 whose main job is to babysit the children while the parents move for shopping.

The robots are designed in a manner that they tell jokes, recite poems and also quizzes the children.

6. Writers and the other reports:

Not only the manufacturing hub but also the writers use the software which is no less than the robots themselves.

Also, there are some machines which generate stories. It is considerably less expensive and more accurate.

Many reporters make use of that machine-generated stories as it not only saves their time but also helps in doing work with a fast pace.

7. Rescuers:

The robots are also used in places where a human cannot reach. There are some jobs that are created by natural disaster calamities.

Like the places where the fire takes place or any place where the natural disaster takes place.

It becomes easy for them to rescue people from the inaccessible places. So, due to this reason also the robots are used in many places like this.

So, these were the types of robots used in varied industries. The robots now have become a partner to all in companies and other fields.

Without robots, the work may get a slow pace but would certainly not come to a standstill as without them also, the work was being done in the past decades.

Benefits of Robots in the Workplace:

Robots are becoming more common these days. In every kind of industry, be it a manufacturing hub, a general workplace or any other, they are the real helping partners in human working there.

There is a number of benefits which are provided by the robots like:

1. Maintenance benefits:

The overall cost of the manufactured product goes high when the work is manual. This was exactly the thing in past decades when the robotic machines were not in the market.

But now, the overall cost of the product reduces as the work is done by the machines; robotic machines.

The product is made through machines, assembled, packaged and even distributed from one department to another. So, this way the overhead cost, including the maintenance cost, is reduced to a much lesser level.

2. Collaboration benefits are received:

The work is done in a collaboration which reduces the time of the worker up to 85%.

The collaborative robots are specifically deployed in the lightweight task to assist the workers, holding the parts for the operators and even applying the fasteners to the manufactured products.

Not just this, the information and the ingredients slips have also stuck by them on the products. In this case, the robots are more like the common labour as the robots work similarly as the labour does at the workplace.

3. The work is done within no time:

The human cannot work as fast as the robotic machines can do. The pace of human cannot be increased even if they have a lot of experience.

The robots can work within a blink of an eye to which human take hours to complete. So, the robots help saving the time and the work is done in the jiffy.

4. The robots can perform the task which is difficult and dangerous for human:

The task which is dangerous for the health of a human body can be done by the robots. The work is done in a more efficient manner and also saves a number of lives.

The human body may get hurt, but the robotic machine would certainly not get hurt. Not just this, they can also work with constant speed.

So, this way the robots can perform the difficult tasks in an easy manner.

5. The robots work with a high degree of precision:

The robots at work place are with a greater degree of exactness and accuracy. They work with the similar velocity the whole day and unlike human beings, their energy never fades away.

Also, they can repeat the task any number of times in a day without getting tired.

6. More products are manufactured in less time:

The robots work faster than humans and this results in more finished products than what could be done manually.

While they help with increased production, the production of the defective good decreases; producing similar quality products in less time and more accuracy.

7. Used in chemical industries:

The robots are also used in the chemical industries, chemical spills, nuclear plants and so on.

They help in reducing the company loss by working in dangerous environmental conditions like polluted environment, in collection and cleaning of radioactive waste.

8. They are more flexible in working:

The robots are flexible in working. They can work even in the adverse conditions, but this could not be done by the human.

So, the place where the human has no reach, the robots are used, send and task is accomplished. So, in this way they are flexible in every situation.

9. They work without committing mistakes:

The robots work day in day out, that too without making any mistake which is the best thing about them.

The human brain gets tired and requires rest, unlike robots. So, this is also one of the advantages of using robots in the workplace.

So, above are some of the advantages the robotic machines or the robots provide. This is the reason why the maximum industries, whether large scale or small scale make use of the robots to make their work easier.

No place is there in the world where the robots or the machines are not being used. Even the computers are sort of robots that work tirelessly and provide the result within no time.

Disadvantages of Robots in the Workplace:

If there are advantages, then there are also many disadvantages to it. Some of the disadvantages are as follows:

1. Increases the unemployment rate:

The unemployment in the country rises as the manual work reduces and the whole work is performed by the robots.

The labour is no longer needed, which reduces the chances of employment in the industries. This is one of the disadvantages of industrial robots.

2. The poor get poorer and the owners get rich:

The poor labours get no work to do, due to which they get poorer. On the other hand, the owners get the work in no time, with increased productivity and more efficiency.

This makes them feather their own caps; making them richer day by day.

3. The cost of affording robots is very high:

Buying the robots and the robotic machines is not a child’s play. Not every company can afford the same.

So, the ones who can afford is a boon for them, but those who are not able to buy has to face the stiff competition. That also lags them behind, getting no place in the market.

4. Financial budget increases than expected:

At times, the financial budget increases than what was expected. So, it puts the company in great financial issues leading the company to be bankrupt, which is a huge unbearable loss for any company.

Also, the maintenance cost of the robot is high. When the company itself is reeling under the pressure of the financial crisis, then how can the company be expected to maintain the robotic machines. It isn’t possible.

5. Maintenance and installation cost is huge:

Once the robots are installed in the company, it certainly is not enough. Maintenance of the machines cost even more than its installation.

And this cannot be afforded by all companies as the profits are not always raining incessantly.

6. Cost needed to train employees with robots:

Even if the robots are ruling the work in many places, the labour is needed to assist them. This is because the whole work cannot be thrown in the ability of the robots.

So, for this reason, the employees need training and that too involves cost. So, this way a lot of money is involved with the installation of machines in the workplace.

7. Robots can be a danger even:

Yes, they can even be a danger. This is because no one can trust a robot as it does not have a human brain which can think before doing anything.

Whatever is fed to the robots through chips is performed even if it goes wrong. Once the machine damages, the whole company can come under chaos.

So, this is also one of the drawbacks for the installation of the machines or the robots in the company.

8. The robots produce a lot of electrical waste:

The robots cannot do something for which they are not designed to do. It makes the people lazy, which is neither good for the company nor for the employees.

Also, the waste produced by the robots cannot be used anywhere which is a huge loss. This also forms one of the biggest disadvantages of having robots and less labour at workplaces.

Conclusion:

So, above are some of the advantages and disadvantages of having robots in the workplace. No one can deny the fact that everywhere the machines are being used.

In the 21st century, the work is impossible without the machines, the robots or the robotic machines. So, instead of counting the disadvantages, one must look at the advantages.
